From medieval times goods are actually transported from the countryside to big towns and cities and the opposite way round. Goods also have been traded with neighboring and distant countries. The best example is the ancient Silk Route. The Silk route used different modes of transportation based on the region. Whilst in certain areas camels were used to handle goods as caravans, in coastal areas ships were the most preferred mode of transportation.
